Prints

  • Print Sizes: All archived images have a final resolution of 360 pixels per inch scanned from the negative, the vast majority having a size of 210 x 297mm, i.e. A4 format. At this resolution the images are readily enlarged to A3 size when necessary and will still yield high quality prints. The Galleries and Preview CDs show the proportions of each image and those which are not to ISO 'A' proportions are readily identifiable. Prints are made at a printing resolution of 2880 dpi min.

  • Borders: A3, A4 and A6 format prints made from images which conform to the 'A' proportions are produced borderless. This printing process involves stretching the image slightly ('extension' in computer speak) and results in a very slight cropping of the image. For the few square images on the website or where the subject extremity is near to the edge of the picture, printing is on A3 or A4 paper with top, left and right borders of 5mm for square images - or top, left and right borders of 14mm for narrow horizontal images. Prints from such images will also include a caption below the image.
A3+ sized prints are only available from images which conform to the 'A' proportions. The image is of A3 size and the remaining A3+ sheet area produces a border. With black borders (see below), the result is very effective.

  • Traditionally, developing and printing services provided prints with white borders; black borders were rarely if ever offered as an alternative because this involved extra work and cost. In the digital 'darkroom', black borders still mean extra work and cost but are easier to produce and, in my opinion, look far more effective for subjects such as those featured on this website. I have elected to use black borders as standard with white as an option. Please see the Print Order Form for more information.
  • Paper: High quality archival paper is used and there is a choice of Gloss (265gsm), Satin (265gsm) or Smooth Fine Art (300gsm) surfaces. The latter paper subdues fine detail very slightly but is preferable for 'atmospheric' images and ideal for those clients requiring an 'exhibition' finish. The combination of these papers and very highly specified printers using either six or seven black inks of graduated density results in images of excellent tonal range and high permanence. Tests indicate a life of approximately 100 years, which means that the prints will comfortably outlive me! When ordering, please remember to specify either 'G' for a Gloss surface, 'S' for a Satin surface or 'F' for a Fine Art surface.

  • Print Care: Although the prints already have high permanence, it is nevertheless recommended that they be mounted behind glass (which acts as a UV filter) and placed away from direct sunlight. Treat them as you would a valued orthodox silver-based photographic print.

  • Packing and Delivery: A4 and A6 prints are dispatched in strong board envelopes. A3 and A3+ prints are dispatched in individual postal tubes. If a print is not to be framed, any curl caused by the tube may be straightened by pulling the print carefully and gently over a straight edge, for example over the edge of a kitchen table or office desk.

  • Provenance: A Certificate of Authenticity is included with each order dispatched, personally signed by the photographer, A. Howard Thomas, who will also sign on behalf of Theresia Thomas as appropriate. Certificates are printed on Smooth Fine Art Paper.

Paper Galleries [Top]

  • Paper Galleries are A4 sized sheets containing small printed images. Horizontal format images measure approximately
28mm x 20mm high and vertical format images measure approximately 20 x 28mm high. Each full A4 page contains 35 such images.

  • Where the original image does not conform to an 'A' format, the 'thumbnail' image prints at a slightly different size. These galleries are generally adequate for the selection of pictures and have the advantage that they can be used without recourse to a computer.

Preview CD [Top]

  • The Preview CDs contain low resolution images which are perfectly adequate for picture selection but are not of sufficiently high quality for printing. These images also contain an embedded copyright notice for security reasons. The CDs also contain a copy of the relevant Database. Printed versions of these databases are also available.
